Case study for the summer course
Statement of interest I have been working on the theme of Identity during a period of 5 years. First I was interested in the problems of indvidual identity, crisis of identity, mainly in the field of social philosophy and psychology (works of E. Erikson, E. Fromm, H. Arendt, A. Giddens).

Then, during the research work, I fel interest in the problem o communal or collective identities. Now it is difficult to define the non-personal identity: whether collective, or ethnic, or national. I suppose that the theoretical problem of ethnic and national identites, the ways of their construction in history, society and culture has become the major issue, especially in the last decade of the XXth century  in the time of the permanent contradiction between the Globalization and the Local culture.[...]

Unfortunately this theme is being developed in Russia mainly as pure theory or the interpretation of the classical works on National character or National identity. [...]

The other problem is that there is no adequate background for Russian students in the understanding of multiculturalism. I have become acquainted with this definition in my Summer Institute of American Studies.

The participation in the course "Cultural Diversities East and West: Postcommunism, Postcolonialism and Ethnicity" will help to elaborate the new special course "Contemporary issues of Ethnicity" for the students of Cultural Studis and for philosophers, mainly for the 4th and 5th grade. The participation in the Summer University will also help to add some new contemporary materials to the course on Cultural Anthropology. This is the new discipline in the curriculum of Rostov State University. The major centers for this field of knowledge are Moscow and St. Petersburg.
